Born in Central Europe in 1811, John Neumann spent the first 25 years of is life there and then moved to New York.  At the age of 29, after being ordained a priest, John joined the Redemptorists.  By the age of 41, he was the bishop of Philadelphia.  John's compassion, his knowledge of the many languages of regional immigrants, and his frugality endeared him to his flock.  A skillful organizer, he created the diocesan school system familiar to us today.  Saint John Neumann is the patron saint of Immigrants.  His feast day is January 5.
