The history of the image of Our Lady Untier of Knots is an interesting one. Painted by Johann Schmidtner around 1700, the original resides in the Catholic pilgrimage church of Saint Peter am Perlach in Bavaria. The painting was commissioned by a gentleman after a prayerful appeal to Mary, to untie and smooth the knots of his marriage, was answered. Hundreds of years later, a student admired the painting and came to encourage its veneration. That student was the man we now know as Pope Francis. The image of Our Lady Untier of Knots is framed under glass. Its overall dimensions are 10-1/4 inches by twelve inches.
