The Tradition:

The tradition of the Oplatki originated in Poland as early as the seventeenth century.  The Oplatki are enjoyed by families, typically right before the Christmas Eve meal. The entire family will gather around the table with the Oplatek. Generally, the eldest member of the family will begin the ritual by breaking off a piece of the wafer and passing it to another family member with a blessing. This blessing can simply consist of what you desire for your loved one in the upcoming year – whether it be good health, success, or happiness. The purpose of this act is primarily to express one's love for each member of his or her family.

The significance of the Oplatki Christmas wafer is in that it shadows the Eucharistic meal Catholics participate in at each Mass.  Just as we share in the Eucharist as one family in Christ and receive Christ’s love through the Eucharist, the Oplatki allows for one’s immediate family to come together and share the love they have for one another.

Although this tradition is primarily enjoyed by the human members of the family, even the family pets can partake.  Traditionally, this corresponds to the animals that were present at Christ’s birth.  However, in current times, this can also represent the important role that pets play in the family.  The colored Oplatki are made especially for pets, although both colors are fit for human consumption.

The Oplatki tradition is one that is easy and fun to introduce to the family at Christmas time. All it requires is a simple wafer paired with love and affection, and the willingness to share it. This is a heartwarming tradition that will enhance your family’s time together during the Christmas season.

Our order arrived quickly and was packaged so carefully! I was thrilled, as I had put off ordering this year until much later than usual. This was our first order with F.C. Ziegler Company and we will definitely be ordering again! Thank you for helping us keep the tradition!!

    A very Polish tradition

Posted by Scott Dembowski on 12th Dec 2016

My family has used these for generations, and my adult children would totally freak out if we didn't have them.

It costs more to ship these than to buy them, but I have ordered them from F.C. Ziegler for years and have never received a broken wafer. I can't say the same for the places I've used prior.

a Must Have for our Christmas Dinner!

Posted by Joanne A on 19th Dec 2015

When I was young, my grandparents used to buy these from the Polish Catholic Church each year. After they passed away, we had no idea where to get them from until we found Ziegler's. Now they are a wonderful tradition again in our family! They are always perfect; never broken, and arrive very fast!

Ziegler's allowed us to continue a family tradition!

Posted by Unknown on 28th Dec 2014

My aunt always sent wafers from the family home town in CT, made by the nuns from the local Polish Catholic Church my grandfather and other immigrated Poles founded in the community. My aunt has passed away, and that church gone ( or nearly so, due to younger people preferring a newer nearby church). I was looking at Zieglers.com for Christmas ornaments, and came across the Oplatki, what a gift! I liked the included information on the traditions. My package arrived quickly & was well wrapped, no damage to the fragile wafers! It was a wonderful way to memorialize some lost family members & continue the family tradition. Thanks for offering these for sake!
